Terms of Use

1. About these Terms

These Terms of Use govern access to and use of How I Met, including the mobile application, public website, API-backed features, profile discovery, messaging, safety tools, and optional AI-assisted experiences (together, the Service). By creating an account, signing in, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

How I Met is designed for adults who want more contextual ways to meet people: profiles, moments, preferences, stories, connection requests, and conversations before or after a match. These Terms are written to explain the standards that make that experience respectful, lawful, and safe.

2. Eligibility and account access

You must be at least 18 years old to use How I Met. If you are under 18, you must not create an account, browse profiles, send messages, upload content, or use any part of the Service.

You must provide accurate account information, keep control of the email address used for sign-in, protect any authentication code or session token, and tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access. You may not create accounts for other people, impersonate another person, misrepresent your age or identity, or use another person's account.

3. What the Service provides

The Service may let you create and edit a profile, add photos and profile prompts, set dating or social preferences, choose discovery filters, view compatible profiles, send or receive connection requests, exchange messages, block or report users, receive notifications, and use optional voice, podcast, profile-assistance, or other AI-assisted features.

Features may vary by platform, geography, account status, app version, and technical availability. We may add, remove, suspend, limit, or change features when necessary for product improvement, safety, legal compliance, maintenance, security, or operational reasons.

4. Your profile, preferences, and visibility

You are responsible for the names, photos, messages, profile answers, moments, preferences, filters, introductions, and other content or choices submitted from your account. Profile fields may include personal or sensitive information, such as dating intentions, gender identity, sexual orientation, relationship preferences, political opinions, religious affiliation, ethnic origin, lifestyle information, location, or similar details. Only provide information you are comfortable using in the Service.

Some profile information is shown to other users so the Service can work. Visibility may depend on your chosen connection mode, profile settings, discovery filters, safety decisions, and product behavior. You must not post another person's private information without permission, upload images of people who have not consented, or use content that you do not have the right to use.

5. Connections, messages, reports, and blocking

Connection requests and conversations must be respectful, lawful, and consensual. A message or request may reference a profile element, photo, or bio section, and may trigger notifications to the recipient. If a user blocks you, you must not try to contact that person through another account or by circumventing our tools.

Reports are intended for safety, moderation, and support. You must use reporting tools honestly and in good faith. We may review reported profiles, messages, photos, or account activity, and we may take action such as removing content, limiting visibility, deleting conversations, suspending accounts, or preserving information where needed for safety, legal, or compliance reasons.

6. AI-assisted and voice features

How I Met may include optional AI-assisted features, such as profile coaching, voice interactions, podcast-like audio, profile or filter suggestions, generated responses, photo or text processing, transcription, and related assistance. These features are provided to help you express yourself, understand the app, or navigate your dating experience, but they are not professional advice, legal advice, therapy, emergency support, or a guarantee of compatibility or safety.

You are responsible for reviewing any AI-assisted suggestion before using it. Do not submit confidential, highly sensitive, illegal, or third-party information to AI features unless you have the right and are comfortable doing so. We may limit or refuse AI-assisted outputs that appear unsafe, unlawful, abusive, or inconsistent with these Terms.

7. Prohibited behavior

You must not use the Service to do, encourage, or facilitate any of the following:

  • harassment, stalking, intimidation, threats, coercion, hate, humiliation, or targeted abuse;
  • sexual content involving minors, exploitation, non-consensual intimate content, or unsolicited explicit content;
  • violence, self-harm encouragement, illegal activity, scams, fraud, phishing, or deceptive commercial activity;
  • impersonation, fake identity misuse, age misrepresentation, catfishing, or unauthorized account access;
  • spam, scraping, bulk messaging, automated account creation, abusive data collection, or reverse engineering;
  • uploading malware, attempting to disrupt the Service, bypassing security, or probing private systems;
  • posting content that infringes privacy, intellectual property, publicity, contractual, or other rights;
  • using reports, blocks, or safety features in a knowingly false, abusive, or retaliatory way.

8. Content ownership and limited license

You keep the rights you have in the content you provide. To operate the Service, you grant How I Met a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, process, adapt for technical display, transform into app formats, display, transmit, moderate, translate, and otherwise use your content as needed to provide, secure, improve, and support the Service.

This license ends when your content is deleted from the Service, except where continued processing is necessary for backups, safety, legal obligations, dispute handling, fraud prevention, or other legitimate operational purposes. You represent that you have the rights needed to grant this license and that your content complies with these Terms.

9. Safety, moderation, and enforcement

How I Met can help users discover and communicate, but it cannot guarantee the identity, intentions, honesty, availability, compatibility, or offline behavior of any user. We do not promise background checks or continuous monitoring of every interaction. Use judgment, protect your personal information, meet in public places when appropriate, and report concerning behavior.

We may use manual review, automated systems, user reports, technical signals, and service-provider tools to detect abuse and enforce these Terms. If we believe there is a risk to users, the Service, or legal compliance, we may remove content, restrict features, disable discovery, suspend or terminate an account, preserve records, or cooperate with lawful requests.

10. Account deletion and termination

You can request account deletion from the app settings. Account deletion is designed to remove the account and associated profile, photos, filters, selected moments, messages, connections, push tokens, authentication codes, and safety records tied to the account, subject to limited retention where required or permitted for security, legal obligations, backups, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, or protection of users.

We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms, create safety risks, violate the law, misuse the Service, interfere with operations, or expose How I Met or other users to potential harm or liability.

11. Third-party services

The Service may rely on third-party providers for hosting, databases, file storage, search, push notifications, email, maps, analytics or diagnostics, artificial intelligence, transcription, speech generation, image processing, and other technical operations. Your use of device platforms, app stores, browsers, networks, or third-party websites may also be governed by their own terms and policies.

12. Availability and changes

The Service is provided on an evolving basis. We aim to operate it carefully, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or compatible with every device or operating system. Maintenance, incidents, provider outages, legal requirements, user safety, or product changes may interrupt or limit access.

13. Disclaimers

To the extent permitted by applicable law, How I Met is provided "as is" and "as available". We disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, uninterrupted availability, and accuracy of profile, matching, recommendation, AI-assisted, or discovery results.

Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot legally be limited, including mandatory consumer rights or rights arising from our intentional misconduct or gross negligence where applicable.

14. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law, How I Met will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages, loss of data, loss of goodwill, emotional distress, or harm arising from user conduct, offline meetings, third-party services, unauthorized access, service interruptions, or reliance on AI-assisted or discovery features.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms when the Service, legal requirements, safety practices, or operational needs change. The "Last updated" date shows when the current version was posted. If a change materially affects your rights or obligations, we will take reasonable steps to provide notice as required by applicable law.

16. Applicable rights and contact

These Terms are intended to operate alongside any mandatory rights you have under the laws that apply to you. They do not exclude protections that cannot be waived by contract. For privacy information, see the Privacy Policy. For cookie and similar technology information, see the Cookie Policy.
